Swat Union Council Farmers Demand Irrigation Water

The livelihood of hundreds of households in the Fatehpur union council are affected by a disruption in the water supply for irrigation.

The farmers of Fatehpur, which is a part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat district, have demanded the authorities to restore the supply of irrigation water to their fields, according to a Dawn news report. The supply was discontinued due to recent road construction by the National Highway Authority in the area.

The main source of income in the Fatehpur union council is agriculture.

Local farmer Liaqat Ali said the agricultural fields in Bachaabad village have gone barren without water and affected the local peach orchards. Mr. Ali claimed 500 households were affected due to the loss of agricultural activity.

The residents have called upon the irrigation department to repair the irrigation channel. The department’s executive engineer told Dawn that the farmers need to send an official application for work to begin on repairs.
